NORMUN
2023
21-22 October 2023
What is MUn?
"Model United Nations is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students step into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organisation's agenda. While playing their role as ambassadors, student delegates make speeches, prepare draft, resolutions, negotiate with allies and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the Model UN conference rules of procedure - all in the intrest of mobilizing international cooperation to resolve problems that affect countries all over the world." - UNA-USA
the theme for NORMUN 2023 is "A world elevated by technology".
Theme of NORMUN 2023
“A world elevated by technology”
Technology, the most pressing issue of all time, will be the focus of NORMUN 2023, from its inaugural year. Do we know where technology is taking us? Do we have a clue what we have in store for us in the light of its unstoppable advancement?
History tells us that electronic contraptions introduced to us a century ago, continuous to bring entertainment. Five decades from then, the first mobile phone revolutionizes telecommunication. It shrinks the world and makes us closer to each other. Furthermore, the recent discovery of CRISPR Cas9 promised us a future where genetic diseases and cancer can be cured. We live in hope to see a world where individuals are not born with congenital disorders and die young. However, abuse of technology has introduced ineluctable threats that pervade today’s society of ours.
Consider mobile phones – an inextricable companion of our lives. The continuous development of technology has had an irrevocably transformative effect on our lives. At the same time, we remain vulnerable to cyber threats.
In order to balance the inestimable advantages of technology, we must be prudent and contemplate the challenges technology poses. This is the primary objective of NORMUN 2023: to equip ourselves with diverse perspectives through which we reflect upon technological advancements.
During the upcoming weeks of the conference, consider how technology continues to shape the world. Could there be a hidden repercussion of technology you previously did not think of? Could people be suffering from technologies that have become inextricably linked to our lives? From your avid engagements in NORMUN 2023, we hope you can further develop yourself into an erudite student who is not blinded by the comforts introduced technology. We hope that you get to discern its merits and appraise its drawbacks. Only then can we find solutions to conflicts and issues revolving around technology, creating a world elevated by technology.
